• Once treatment is completed, extensive follow-up is essential. This includes physical examination, x-rays and
scans, blood tests, tests of thyroid and pituitary function, attention to dental and oral hygiene, jaw exercises
and evaluation of vision and hearing.
Stages I and II
Standard Treatment High-dose radiotherapy to the primary area and both sides of the neck.
Five-Year Survival 65 to 95 percent (Stage I), 50 to 65 percent (Stage II)
Stage III
Standard Treatment Same as for Stages I and II, but surgical neck dissection may be needed if enlarged lymph nodes in the neck either do not completely disappear after radiotherapy or recur.
Neoadjuvant chemotherapy given before radiotherapy has been shown to significantly improve the response to treatment and survival in advanced nasopharyngeal cancer.
